Are you really hard on yourself when it comes to growing your business and meeting your goals?
When I first started my business it felt like I would beat myself up for every little mistake I made, which made it VERY hard to move forward. A lot of times it felt like I was moving in slow motion, weighed down by loads of guilt, shame, and embarrassment.
I wasn’t building my business with a growth mindset, I was building it with a lack mindset – which made things much harder than they needed to be.
If you can relate to that experience, then today’s episode is going to be extremely helpful for you because I’m going to be shedding some light on three hidden areas in your own business where a lack mindset may be lurking AND what you need to do in order to unlock your own growth mindset so you can build your business with more ease and way less overwhelm..
So, let’s get started.
My name is Caitlin Bacher, CEO of Scale With Success®, and I’m on a mission to help course creators all over the world grow their business in a way that is profitable and scalable. I’m sharing revealing insights about what it really takes to scale an online course business to millions of dollars per year. Join me here to discover the tough decisions I’ve had to make, the biggest failures I’ve had to bounce back from, and the learnings that emerged every step of the way. I’m so grateful that I have the chance to tell you everything right here on Scale With Success®: The Podcast. Let’s get started.
When is the last time you tried something, didn’t get the result you wanted, and told yourself you’d never do it again?
Maybe you had a bad experience with a previous course, so now you’re hesitant to invest in another one.
Maybe you tried hosting a webinar and nobody showed up, so now you’ve sworn them off entirely.
Maybe you shared a bold opinion on social media and you got some hate for it, so now you’re not sharing any opinions.
Ask any successful course creator and they will tell you that they’ve had the exact same experiences – but there’s one BIG difference.
You see, they didn’t have one negative experience with a course – they’ve had 20. They haven’t hosted one failed webinar – they’ve had 10. They haven’t gotten one hate comment on social media, they’ve had hundreds.
That’s why they’re successful – they didn’t let a handful of failures get in the way of what they wanted to achieve. .
The good news is that even if you’re struggling with making decisions with a growth mindset now, it is possible to get better.
So, what do you need to DO in order to make that happen?
1. Your Past Does Not Dictate Your Future
Every successful CEO has experienced some pretty epic failures including myself. I’ve tried strategies that didn’t work, bought software I never used, and spent money on ads that didn’t produce a single sale.
I’ve held webinars that no one attended, sent emails no one ever received, and opened enrollment to programs that no one bought.
But, you know what? I kept going, not because it was easy – but because I was more committed to growing my business and to helping as many people as possible than I was to avoiding the temporary pain that comes with a temporary defeat.
Was it always that way for me? NOOOOO. One tiny mistake could take me out for days or even weeks when I was first starting my business because at the time, those mistakes didn’t feel so tiny. In fact, I thought they were catastrophic.
It wasn’t until I started reading more about growth mindset that I became aware that – well – I didn’t always have one. I think that’s important to share because I want you to know that if making decisions with a growth mindset is something you struggle with, you can change it. And those 1% changes day by day add up fast.
If you’re serious about growing your business, you need to understand that the failures, mistakes, and challenges you face everyday won’t get smaller as you grow – they’ll get bigger.
So, I hear you when you tell me that once you bought a $2k course and didn’t like it – but, that doesn’t give you permission to never buy another course again.
Because if you can’t learn how to bounce back from a $2k investment gone wrong, you’ll never have the opportunity to bounce back from a $200k investment gone wrong.
The risks don’t get easier over time, they get bigger. Learning how to make decisions quickly in the face of uncertainty even when it feels hard or scary to do is a skill that every successful CEO needs – and giving up after a few fumbles isn’t really gonna cut it.
Now, if you start to see every failure, every setback, every challenge as nothing more than an OPPORTUNITY to get better, stronger, and more courageous – then you truly become unstoppable.
There is no need to feel shame around ANY failure or mistake in business because to be frank, you don’t have time for that because you’ve got moves to make and people to help.
I don’t know who taught you that mistakes and failures were bad, but around here they are something to be celebrated because it’s proof that you are continuing to try new things and move forward.
2. Take The Learnings From The Loss
One thing I see course creators struggle with is not understanding the sheer volume of mistakes and failures that are required in order to grow.
They put so much pressure on themselves to make the “right” decision that they end up doing nothing, which they think is safer than making the wrong decision.
But, all that nothing adds up and before you know it, you’re in the same place you were last year – or worse!
If you view mistakes and failures as an opportunity to learn and grow, instead of something to actively avoid at all costs – you’ll reach your goals much sooner.
One of the things I tell my clients is not to bring Level 10 energy to a Level 2 decision.
A level 10 decision only exists if there is zero possibility to recover from. So, if you’re truly operating from a growth mindset, there’s always an opportunity to pivot and grow.
But, making Level 2 decisions can feel like a Level 10 decision because it’s something new and you’re outside of your comfort zone – which is completely normal and part of the growth process.
It’s not a matter of never bringing Level 10 energy to a Level 2 decision, it’s a matter of recognizing when you are doing it – so tha you can shift out of it.
As your growth mindset develops, eventually you won’t even be able to think of a Level 10 decision because you’ll be trained to see every failure as an opportunity to get stronger – and THAT is the mindset that is required to reach your income goals quickly.
3. Your Success Is Up To You
I have an affirmation that I ask all my clients to say with me at the beginning of every live Office Hours session I host.
It goes like this:
I take ownership of and responsibility for my results. I will be the team member I want to have. I will be the client I want to serve. I am committed to achieve my goals no matter what.
Even if I make mistakes.
Even if I experience unexpected challenges.
Even if I’m not moving as fast as I’d like to be moving.
I am committed to achieve my goals no matter what.
That is how you become unstoppable. Not by being perfect, but by being resilient. Not by hoping someone will come and save you, but by trusting that you don’t need to be saved. Not by being the fastest, but by trusting your own pace. Not by being the smartest, but by trusting yourself to get help when you need it.
You are enough. Just as you are. You have a gift, a method, a process for solving a problem and there are people out there right now, who are looking for the answers that you already have.
Let the shame and the guilt about making a mistake go so you can move forward. If you make that mistake mean anything about you, make it mean that you have the courage to make mistakes, pick yourself back up, and try again and again.
Don’t give up.
So to recap, here are 3 things you need to to know and understand in order to unlock a growth mindset:
1. Your Past Does Not Dictate Your Future
2. Take The Learnings From The Loss
3. Your Success Is Up To You
