Did you know that improving your Instagram bio will result in more followers and sales? It’s true.
A good bio will stop someone in their tracks and make them say, “Wait. What? Who is this? I want to be her friend. I must follow her immediately.” Like any good branding strategy, your bio won’t speak to everyone. In fact, some people will read your bio and run for the hills. That’s good. You want to attract people who like you. Be upfront about who you are and what your brand is.
You can see my bio on Instagram right here. I change it pretty frequently because I’m always testing something. Right now it says, “Want to learn exactly how you can increase sales with social media? Grab your FREE mini-workbook here.”
People may hate your bio.
Some people will see that and be turned off right away because they aren’t a business owner and don’t care about increasing sales, they hate sweatpants, or they just think it’s lame for one reason or another. Who knows? Who cares? That bio is completely in line with my brand’s voice and I only want to attract people who connect with that voice.
Let’s compare two bios.
1) “Want to learn exactly how you can increase sales with social media? Put your sweatpants on and dig into my latest post.”
2) “I create profitable social media strategies for bloggers and online biz owners.”
Which bio do you think will lead to more followers? I know the answer because I tested both. If you guessed #1 you are right!
#1 tested MUCH better and here are a few reasons why:
- I start with a pain point that grabs attention. Notice how I kept it positive. I don’t say, “Are you drowning in a puddle of wine and tears because you can’t get a single sale on social media?” It’s okay to touch on a pain point, but don’t open a gigantic wound.
- Present a solution to their pain. I make it clear that I offer content that will increase sales. I don’t say, “Do you struggle with making sales on social media? Well, that sucks.”
- I used descriptive words that inspire trust. The word “exactly” makes it seem like I know what I’m talking about (and I do). Side note: Don’t put something out there if you can’t follow through. My courses are known for telling people exactly what to do so there is no guess work. Some people like courses that go into detail with tons of examples. Those are my people. I want to attract people who value that.
- I threw in the word sweatpants. Some people might be all about that sweatpant life and if they are, we are made for each other.
- I give a call to action, “dig into my latest post.” That little phrase alerts people to the fact that I have a blog and that they should drop everything and read it immediately.
TAKE ACTION
So, how can you write a bio that increases sales and follows?
- Engage your audience by touching on a pain point.
- Postion yourself as their solution.
- Use descriptive words that make people feel a certain way.
- Mention something unexpected that speaks to your brand.
- Give a call to action.
