So, you WANT to join a mastermind to create exponential growth in your business, BUT you’re not quite sure WHICH ONE to choose.

Well, you’re in luck because today I’m going to share three key things to consider when choosing a mastermind that’s right for you.

If you have NO idea what a mastermind is or why so many successful course creators join them, make sure to read “3 Reasons Why I Joined A Mastermind.

In that blog post, you’ll learn why I’ve been in the same mastermind for the last three years and the truth about how joining one completely transformed my business.

Already read it? Ok, great. Let’s keep going.

There is no such thing as a perfect mastermind that is right for EVERYONE, but it is possible to find a mastermind that is right for YOU.

By the end of this post, you’ll have real clarity on what specific things YOU need to consider when choosing your first (or next) mastermind.

I say “next” because last year I was actually in THREE masterminds all at the same time. That may sound a little crazy, but each one was different and had something unique to offer. I was really glad I did it!

Before we dig into how to choose a mastermind that is right for you, I’d like to take a moment to help you get clear on WHAT VISION you want to create for yourself while you’re IN the mastermind.

Creating a vision for your life and business is one of the first things I’ll be doing with new members of the mastermind I host, ALTITUDE.

ALTITUDE is a mastermind for course creators who are already generating over $250k per year and we also have a level for course creators making over $1m per year.

I don’t have time to lead you through the entire vision activity right now, but I’ll take you through a portion of it so you can have a taste of what it feels like to do it.

The most important part of this visualization exercise is to THINK BIG. I want you to envision a life and business for yourself with the absolute certainty you can create all of it. I mean, if you KNEW that whatever you envisioned would 100% come true in 3 years, WHY would you settle for ANYTHING less than what you really want.

I want you to get clear on what you want. Don’t worry about the how, yet.

In fact, if you think you already KNOW the how, that’s a sign you aren’t dreaming big enough. Your brain is elastic, stretch it beyond what you believe is possible for yourself right now.

Ok, so let’s begin.

It’s the morning of December 31, 2022…you just woke up.

Open your eyes. Where are you? Is someone next to you? Who is it? What does your room look like?

How do you feel? Rested? Excited? Something else?

What do you hear? Leaves rustling? Ocean waves crashing? Your kids playing?

Get up. Where do you go? Out to the rose garden where your morning coffee is waiting for you on a gorgeous walnut side table by a giant, cozy wicker chair? Over to your beautiful kitchen with white marble countertops to drink a tall glass of lemon-basil infused water?

Open your laptop. How much profit is piling up in your bank account right now? $100,000? $500,000? $1,000,000?

How does it make you feel to have MORE than enough money in the bank?

How does it feel to know that you have grown an audience that LOVES to invest in your programs?

They LOVE to give you money EVERY time you give them an opportunity to do so.

You are helping so many people break their cycle of suffering and creating a positive change in the world. How many people are impacted by you? And how many people are THEY able to impact as a result of making a positive change in their own life?

Ok, we could continue on, but for the sake of time – let’s stop there.

So, what did you think of that exercise? What came up for you while you did it? Did you start to judge yourself for choosing something that seemed “too unrealistic”?

It’s not good or bad if you did or didn’t, just notice it and let it go.

The reason I like to start off my mastermind with this activity is because we can get right to the heart of the matter: what do you want to create.

This takes you right out of circumstance and catapults you into the realm of opportunity.
Your mastermind can help you design a plan for ANYthing, but we can’t do it unless we know EXACTLY what you want.

So, let’s dig into 3 Key Things To Consider when choosing a mastermind that’s right for you.

Thing #1 To Consider: What conditions is the host using to curate the members?

I believe that the value in a mastermind is in the curation of the membership. For example, if I allowed ANYONE with a heartbeat and the money to invest inside ALTITUDE, that wouldn’t be very valuable to YOU at all.

Getting the right people in the right room is something I do not take lightly.

There are three steps to apply for Altitude.

First, you’ll have to fill out an application. This application will ask you questions about current and future revenue, plus some other stuff that will us us get to know your business better. The more details you can provide, the better.

Second, each application is reviewed by me. If have any follow up questions or if something on your application is unclear to me, you’ll receive an email asking for further clarification.

Third (and final) step is showing up for your interview with an Altitude enrollment specialist. On the call, if you mutually determine that Altitude is the next best step for your business, you’ll be offered a spot and make your first month’s payment.

We only accept applications from course creators who are already generating at least $250,000 per year. Plus, we have another level for those who are already generating at least $1,000,000 in revenue.

Knowing HOW the host of the mastermind you are considering joining is choosing to curate their membership is incredibly important.

I have joined masterminds in the past where I assumed that I would be joined by others who were generating similar levels of revenue. I was WAY off and it negatively affected by experience inside the group.

Don’t get me wrong, the other members were SUPER smart and incredibly generous – but their inexperience in the things I was actively experiencing in my own business made it difficult to get the support I needed.

The specific nature of our mastermind (course creators generating over $250,000) really increases the value of the group and the collective wisdom that you’ll be able to tap into.

Again, the curation of ALTITUDE is extremely important to me. The second you walk into the room, I want you to FEEL like you belong here. That’s only possible if I make the curation of the group a high priority.

Thing #2 To Consider: What level of participation will be expected of me?

ALTITUDE is different than most other masterminds in that we value commitment in every single member. Each year we host three, 2 day events. Those events are NOT optional, your attendance is required.

Here’s why.

Once I paid $50,000 per year to join a mastermind and half the members didn’t even show up to the events. I made the critical mistake of assuming each of my fellow masterminders would attend and I never asked the host if we were required to attend.

Now, I ALWAYS ask if attendance is required.

The VALUE in the mastermind is the collective wisdom of the group. It’s not just about what YOU can get out of the mastermind, it’s about what you can contribute. If you don’t show up to the live events OR the monthly group calls, it is negatively affecting the experience of the others.

Since attendance is required for our ALTITUDE monthly calls and live events, we attract course creators who are COMMITTED. Yes, they are committed to making their OWN goals happen –  but, they’re ALSO committed to contributing to the group itself.

As a result, our members are able to forge deep connections and friendships that go far beyond the mastermind container itself. Belonging to a community like ours is important to your continued growth and success.

As the CEO of a business that is generating over $250,000 it is YOUR responsibility to get the support you need. You deserve to surround yourself with people who are equally committed so that you can give your business the best chance of success.

Thing #3 To Consider: What outcome am I committed to creating over the next 12 months?

If you’re like me, you’ll likely sign up for the same mastermind year after year – but even if that is the case, it’s important to think about what you want to happen THIS year.

What would need to happen 12 months from now in order for you to consider this year a “breakthrough” year?

For most course creators, a revenue goal is included, but you may have some ancillary goals as well…starting a new podcast…hosting a live retreat…opening a new program…building out your team…leasing an office space and hiring a local team.

The year I joined my first mastermind, I only had ONE goal: to make $1m. It was a pretty big leap to go from $200k to $1m in 12 months, but I set the intention and let my mastermind know that THAT was what I wanted support around.

So, for me, that year was NOT about creating a new podcast or launching a new program.

It was about optimizing one course and scaling the heck out of it.

There is no right or wrong way to do it.

It’s entirely up to you.

There is one ADDITIONAL question that you need to answer for yourself and that is: What am I willing to sacrifice to reach my goal over the next 12 months?

…Is it your need to be right?
…Is it your fear of being judged?
…Is it your reluctance to ask for help?
…Is it your desire to please everyone?
…Is it your procrastination?…Is it your desire to WAIT UNTIL YOU FEEL READY?

Feeling ready is a choice. If you want to be ready, then make the decision to be ready.

Be willing to sacrifice perfection, judgement, procrastination, and your reluctance to ask for help.

Everything you want is on the other side of that sacrifice and it’s important to surround yourself with people who are equally committed to making those sacrifices.

I believe that there IS mastermind that is right for you and only YOU are able to determine which one it will be.

Next week, I’ll be back to clarify some major differences between group coaching and masterminds – more specifically, the differences between our own group coaching program, Scale with Success®, and our ALTITUDE mastermind.
